    LEGALITIES

Esports betting in the UK is a pretty straight forward legal matter and the answer is: yes, Esports betting is legal in the UK, as long as you’re at least 18 years old.

ESL uk, Esports betting, Esports in the UK, Esports, Esports betting

Worldwide, the first gambling commission to issue a discussion paper that clarifies whether or not Esports betting is legal was the UKGC. In their paper, they clarified the use of licensing for skin betting (which involves in-game items called skins) as well as standard betting (which is done with money). They decided that all Esports betting activities constitute gambling and should be dealt with according to the standard UK gambling rules.

    Local Governing Bodies

Esports betting in the UK is regulated by the Gambling Commission and the newly emerging Esports associations. Here is a list of the local governing bodies:

    The UK Gambling Commission

    The Esports Integrity Coalition

    British Esports Association

    The Globalisation of Esports

The Esports world is growing fast, with thousands of professional teams, millions of viewers and huge revenues. In 2015 the industry generated $325 million from ticket sales, advertising,  media rights and merchandising, with big money prizes and huge sponsorship deals on offer for the top Esports teams. As well as major international knockout tournaments, there are also a number of ‘ladder’ competitions, where teams compete on an ongoing basis, all trying to reach the top rung of the ladder.

Betting on Esports is also rising rapidly, with some experts estimating that around $23.5 billion will be staked on Esports by 2020, and one bookmaker projecting that more individual bets would be placed on a major “League of Legends" tournament than on the winners of the European Champions League.

Esports betting is a relatively new form of betting that allows you to take your passion for Esports and your betting skills to a whole new level. As the name implies, Esports betting gives you the chance to bet on Esports matches and tournaments and you can do this all year long. This will no doubt enhance your tournament viewing experience but also allow you to make money, as long as you do enough research and are aware of all the critical factors that can decide the result of a match.

    Where to get started?

There are many ways to bet on your top titles through your most trusted and favourites Bookmakers such as Betway, Bethard and William Hill. and most of the top Bookmakers now even offer specific sections devoted to the exploding amount of high stakes matches, tournaments and fast growing following. In terms of betting it has many similarities to others sport types which you can read about in our Sports Betting Guide. Another option is to bet P2P with sites such as MLG and UMG offering tournaments, wagers and ladders which are becoming increasingly popular in the states and around the world.

Esports tournaments went from humble beginnings to worldwide fame in just one short decade. In 2010, there were only around 700 Esports tournaments per year, and even the big ones had fairly small prize pools compared to today’s standards. In 2018, we’ll have around 4000 Esports tournaments, many of which are live events held in huge arenas with a seating capacity of 1000+ or even 10.000+. These events are also streamed live via Twitch, YouTube and Facebook to millions of others.

With all of this action taking place all year long, Esports betting has never been a more viable hobby that can be used to make money. The only real requirement is good knowledge of at least one Esports title and its professional scene. And at E-Godds, our goal is to provide you with everything you need in order to succeed at this.

How do you bet on Esports?

There are two main ways to enjoy betting on Esports:

    Skin Gambling:

online Esports betting, Skin Gambling, csgo skins, Esports

“Skin Gambling" where you place wagers using in-game items like the weapon covers found in games like CS:GO. These skins have real-world monetary value and can be used as a virtual currency for betting on all kinds of Esports – not only CS:GO, although this game does account for around 85% of the total skin betting market.

    Esportsbook Betting:

online Esports betting, arcanebet, csgo skins, Esports

Many online betting sites now offer betting markets for a wide range of professional Esports. These bet types can be very similar to those you can find for traditional sports like football, basketball and tennis.

    Betting Types

Here are the most common types available for Esports Betting:

    Moneyline

Most bets are on the winning team in a match – what’s called the Moneyline. You’ll see the odds for both teams listed as American, Decimal or Fractional odds, and you can usually change the odds listing to the format you’re most comfortable with.

The majority of games, like League of Legends or Starcraft II are won by completing a task, such as destroying a critical structure or totally dominating an opponent. Bear in mind, however, that CS:GO is different because it has a points system. Each map – the equivalent of a set in tennis - contains 30 rounds, with each team playing the terrorists 15 times and the counter- terrorists 15 times. Each round is worth a point and the winner of the map is simply the team with more points. Most CS:GO matches are best of one (BO1) maps or best of three (BO3).

    Handicap/ Spread Bets

This type of bet is designed to create a betting market when one team is obviously much stronger than its opponent. To level the playing field, the bookmaker offers a range of maps handicaps on the teams. If you choose a handicap of ‘+2’ (sometimes written simply as ‘2’) it means that the team has a virtual advantage of 2 maps. If it loses the match by one map in real life, it still counts as the winner for the purposes of the bet. This makes you more likely to win the bet. It works the other way round too. If you select a handicap of ‘-2’ then the team needs to win by more than two maps to be counted as the winner. This way, you’ll get better odds on the result.

    Future Bets

Also called “Outright Bets,” these are bets on the overall winner of an event or tournament, not just on the outcome of one match. You can place this type of bet either at the start of the tournament or later on, but the odds will, of course, be less generous as the tournament progresses and fewer teams remain.

    Proposition Bets

These are bets such as how many games or points a team wins in the match. This type of bet is popular with Esports betting experts, who can often predict the outcome of a match in more detail, through knowledge of the strength of each team member.

    Combination Bets

Combination bets – also known as combos, accumulators, accas, multiples or parlays – are hugely popular right across the betting world. It’s a way to increase your winnings by betting on more than one outcome at the same time. If you’re betting on two outcomes – a double bet – then the odds of both outcomes are multiplied together, giving you a much bigger payout than if you’d bet on them separately.

    In-play Bets

Most bets are placed before a match happens, but some sites offer you the chance to bet on matches that have already started. The odds change constantly according to how the match develops, but this can be an effective way to bet if you are able to judge the momentum correctly.
